Addiction Now Defined as Brain Disorder, Not Behavior Problem

infoneer-pulse:

Addiction is a chronic brain disorder and not simply a behavior problem involving alcohol, drugs, gambling or sex, experts contend in a new definition of addiction, one that is not solely related to problematic substance abuse.

The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) just released this new definition of addiction after a four-year process involving more than 80 experts.

“At its core, addiction isn’t just a social problem or a moral problem or a criminal problem. It’s a brain problem whose behaviors manifest in all these other areas,” said Dr. Michael Miller, past president of ASAM who oversaw the development of the new definition. “Many behaviors driven by addiction are real problems and sometimes criminal acts. But the disease is about brains, not drugs. It’s about underlying neurology, not outward actions.”

EITHER WAY, all of these addictions could be PREVENTED, by AVOIDING them in the first place.

The Back UP

Lessons on backing up!

Written 26 April 2011, after a day of hassles related to me and my car Xavier backing up on something. (Don’t worry ma, tapos na ito and I’m fine:) )

Indeed I am blessed to have a friend like Ana, Kuya Ty and Ate Weng. I know they live their lives to be a blessing to everyone else, I am so lucky to have them J In this time of suffering and trial, hassle sobra, gastos! Pero I chose it, I chose to be responsible for that small but consequential mistake I had. It just goes to show that however small our mistakes are, there are really positive and negative consequences, the former of which leads to greater things, if taken that way.

In this case, 1. I found out who among the people I know now will stand for me and back me up all the way. In this situation, they were Ana, Kuya Ty, and Ate weng. Hehe amazing. I feel like even with just them I have everything I need, what more with my other friends right? Amazing talaga my King and Saviour, he makes me lie down in green pastures and fills my cup to overflowing. He knows my needs even before I know it. He gives it to me, I just have to be sensitive to it. Lord you are so great and endlessly amazing and powerful!

Number 2. This situation of accidentally backing up on a van, is a test of literal streetsmart, along with the hard lessons of the graces of humility, responsibility, patience, and anger management!

Humility, in the sense that I humbled myself at that time because I didn’t really expose myself as an AFP officer, but I was even more humbled by God, when I realized that after Kuya Ty told them that I am indeed an AFP Officer, it really literally did not mean anything to them on a “so what” attitude. (Funnily enough, the news at that time did not help at all…)  It was then that it hit me that for them to believe that I will keep my part of the deal, we had to win them over not by the rank and status that I usually carry because of my job, but by plain ol’ credibility thru words and actions.

They were really significantly irritating people because they weren’t willing to meet halfway and  were insisting on me paying for what they want in the Casa when I was offering them the same deal for a cheaper price for me from Ana’s yard at Tesca Trading.

Such a great thing that Kuya Ty was there to talk to them and smooth things over in a way that I couldn’t possibly have done. Talk about life in the civilian world. I think I’ve been living in the camp for so long that I forgot how to deal with civilians!

Patience, doing the right is really difficult as it entails hassles and testing situations, dealing with people is really the most difficult thing. (There was even a time that I questioned my decision of looking for them at the restaurant I just ate in, where they were also eating their lunch, so that I didn’t have to deal with all of the hassles of it! But still I couldn’t have that on my conscience)

Responsibility, for the mistake, accountability. Come to think of it, they were actually lucky that I was the type of person who had hit them, because I didn’t just hit them and ran. I was really thankful to Ana for saying “Will back you up all the way Niks!” She really did all that she can, even if her workday is hectic all by itself, and she pulled out all the stops to help me that day! Thanks Ana! J Gratitude also to goes to Kuya Ty for helping me close the deal with them. J

Funny that I had to back up on something, for me to realize the extent to which my friends are willing to back me up! J

Number 3. Communication is key. I know this now partly, I still have a lot to learn  when it comes to this communication. It is indeed a very broad topic, one that I think, entails a lifetime of experiences to perfect, one that is a especially difficult in a world where silence and obedience to commands is highly valued, and where freedom of speech is stifled, it really is unusually hard to practice these things.

More on humility. That is why I love Manny Pacquiao so much, or that I am such a fan. There are tons of things to learn from him. Like right now, I can draw from his humility. His actions really do speak louder than his words. He’s a man of few words, it’s evident in his practice and discipline in training, how he eventually wins matches. In that he’s already a world champion many times over, and still, he learns and practices this amazing left hook that magnifies his winning power in the ring that made him up to this, his 8-time world title. If you think about it, after that 1st or second world title he could already rest on his laurels slash riches, haha but he amazingly did not, therein lies his passion too. He realized he had a lot more to learn. That is the key lesson for me, humility in the realization that I always  have a lot more to learn.

For I also know that the good things I do will have a greater effect in the greater scheme of things, I may not be thanked for it right now, but God knows the good things we do.

I also read in Romans 8:28 – “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose.” From these verses we know that all things that God allows has a meaning and purpose for our own good, because He loves us as His children, he shows us these things so we can learn. Lord may I be continually sensitive to the things you want to teach me Lord.

Furthermore, as I read on, vv 29-30 says For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of His Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers, and those he predestined, he also called: those he called,  he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.”

How amazingly amazing is this? It is even amazing how amazing it is! I know, I know, I’ve said amazing countless times in this article that it’s starting to not make sense anymore, haha but its true and I’m happy about it.

So I understand this as, He has predestined me to be in the likeness of Jesus, called me for a certain purpose, justifies me for that purpose, and glorifies me in that? How astonishing is that? I can’t even begin to comprehend. The even better news is He does that to all of us! C’mon! J

Maybe equally as amazing:

the result to my car = not even a scratch!

Losing my room key in the waters of Dumaluan Beach, Panglao

Losing my room key in the waters of Dumaluan Beach, Panglao Island is no joke.

But it ended up teaching and refreshing to me 5 things:

Listen to the inner voice

Would I bring this key to the beach?

Where would I put it if not? (It turns out you can leave it at the bar)

I could just hold/clip it while swimming. (what a silly thought!)

Hassle, i put it in my board shorts’ back pocket, i even had this thought that i should test they key if it floats or sinks in case it got lost, but i didn’t do it.

It did get lost, must’ve floated away from my pocket, then eventually sank in the sand

You can’t do it alone

I found/talked to people who could help me find the key, after searching for it alone.. mind you, this is around 6 to 7pm already. Dark!!

Lower down your pride and ask for help, decided that I can’t realistically find that key using my penlight! Decided also that I didn’t want to waste 500 pesos (cost of key replacement) of my vacation money (sayang!)

Seek counsel

I asked the Front Desk, “Paano kaya pag ganito?”

She said “Baka mahanap pa ulit ma’m kasi madali pa ngayon, low tide, bukas ng umaga, high tide na.” So from there pinilit ko na talagang hanapin agad dahil sa knowledge na binigay niya.

Listen not to “Nay-sayers”

So i asked from the staff at the bar for some help, and there was this one guy who took all his effort in proceeding to convice every one of the staff to not help me. He kept on telling them and me that this problem is just my problem, not the staff’s! I know that, I was just asking for help, if maybe someone can offer something. He kept on telling me na “hindi na mahahanap ngayon yan dahil natabunan na ng sand.” Kept on asking me if i knew where I lost it, and kept saying na i should just pay the 500 php charge. Super badtrip. Pinigilan ko na lang ang init ng ulo ko dahil i was the one who needed help, and just said “Let’s just try, ako na lang bahala pag di natin nakita, let’s just try, atleast magtry tayo. Luckily or by God’s grace, the crew had their own decision and decided to help me scan the shallow waters in search for the key. One even brought this super huge flashlight!! Like 50 times bigger than my penlight that I initially used! Lol! Basically nalooy/naawa ang staff sa akin haha!

(I was asked a million times kung mag isa lang ako at bakit? Maybe I should’ve told them, bakit, bawal na ba magretreat mag isa ngayon? Haha! If I only had a peso for the many times I was asked that question during the whole trip!)

There will really be naysayers in this world, but we just have to overcome them by faith and positivity.

You will find what you are looking for just when you are about to give up, so don’t give up just yet

Amazingly, we were about to give up after minutes of searching in and beyond my estimated circumference of loss, i did this one last sweep and was just walking it out to the beach, then suddenly, I stepped on the key!! I didn’t see it! But i felt it! Just like God and His love. We just feel it!

All along while looking for the key I was praying that only by faith and against all odds, like tide and complete darkness, we can still find the lost key. I was also asking all along, why Lord? Why did you let it get lost? I know that You don’t leave anything to chance and that there is a plan.

Ayun na nga, I had to lose it, to find it, and learn these valuable lessons in the process.
